Toulon Golf Small Batch Southampton

Small Batch Southampton

Long before Southampton became one of America's most celebrated seaside destinations, it was defined by the rugged elements that continue to shape its landscape today. Rolling sand dunes, windswept fescue, and the relentless Atlantic breeze created a setting where golf could never overpower nature—it could only adapt to it. Those same forces helped forge the character of Shinnecock Hills, a course revered not for excess, but for its purity, restraint, and unwavering demand for precision. Crafted with a design philosophy rooted in simplicity, balance, and purpose, Small Batch Southampton reflects the enduring character of one of golf's most iconic landscapes. Every contour, line, and surface serves a function, honoring a place where the elements have always been the ultimate architect.

Southampton

In designing Southampton, we went back to that summer weekend in June of 2018. Watching the champion navigate the diabolical US Open set-up at Shinnecock with a classically designed blade we were drawn to the putter’s obvious difference – its face insert. Calling on our extensive experience in the design of inserts in putters, we were inspired to recreate the winning putter in our own way.

The two main reasons to use an insert are to either create a higher moment of inertia (if using a lightweight material) or to influence feel. In the case of Southampton, we were primarily interested in creating a slightly softer feel than we might obtain from a stainless-steel face.

Once again inspired by the champion’s putter, we turned immediately to softer metals and discovered an awesome material to be used for our first ever inserted putter.

Enter the Purple Copper insert

Purple copper is a high-purity (99.9%+) elemental copper. It gets its name because when freshly milled from block it has a rich, rose-red color, which over time develops a purplish hue as a thin copper oxide film forms on the surface.

Southampton’s insert is milled from this ultra-premium pure copper and it produces the softer feel and slightly muted sound that we wanted. We also fell in love with the richness of its appearance.

The vibrant rose color of the freshly milled insert is stunning against the Tour Satin Mist finish of the 904L stainless head. And as the putter ages with use, the insert will slowly patina – taking on a slightly purple hue that created its purple copper name. This living aesthetic will leave you with a piece that over time will morph in a way that is totally unique to your putter, just as Shinnecock Hills has been naturally shaped by the elements.

The Body

We love the tailored and angular lines of Southampton. Taking design cues from our popular San Diego design, we kept the straight and squarish shape that runs both toe to heel and front to back. We wanted the curves, lines, radii and chamfers to feel as though they were shaped by the elements the players endure at Shinnecock.

Southampton will give you the feel that it’s been in the bag for a long time right out of the box.

The Rest of the Package

True to the putter that triumphed in 2018, we finished the 904L in a raw silver satin mist finish. The gentle blast will protect against glare and give the putter a softened appearance. We especially like the way the silver finish sets off a great contrast with the natural beauty of the copper insert.

We wanted the graphics to convey the sometimes brutal beauty of Southampton’s ocean wind. The winds off the Atlantic have helped shape some of the most beautiful coastline anywhere in the world. The putter’s sole embraces the ever-shifting wind pattern that creates not only the natural beauty of the area, but also the extreme challenges of Shinnecock Hills.

On the face you’ll find our ultra-fine double fly cut that blends seamlessly from 904L to purple copper and back to 904L. We’ve adorned the heel with our customary SB stamp surrounded by five stars. Each star represents one of the five founding clubs that made up the beginnings of the USGA, including Shinnecock Hills.

The back cavity is our Toulon wordmark, softly engraved, lower and towards the toe. Paired with a steel KBS CT Tour shaft, a custom-designed pistol midsize grip and custom headcover, the entire package is executed in quiet confidence. The purple copper insert is the star of the show on Southampton and truly defines the joy of feel
